What ”reliable” means in an international move

Every mover calls itself reliable. This page is written by one of them, and rather than repeat the word it explains how reliability is produced in a move to or from Austria and how you can check it before you sign – with the registers, documents and questions that separate a company that shows up on the agreed day with the agreed crew and the agreed paperwork from one that does not. Where moves to and from Austria go wrong

Almost never on the motorway. They fail at five points: the volume was guessed, so the truck is too small or the price changes; the address was never asked about – and in Austria that matters, because Vienna’s pre-1919 Altbau districts (Neubau, Josefstadt, Margareten, Ottakring) have small lifts or none, so the furniture lift (Möbellift, around €150–€300 a day) is how a sofa reaches the third floor; the no-stopping zone (Halteverbotszone) for the moving vehicle is applied for at MA 46 at least ten working days ahead, with the signs in place 24 hours before; Alpine addresses add winter access rules; customs paperwork was left to the customer, so the truck waits at the border; the job was subcontracted twice, so nobody owns the delivery date; and the insurance turned out to be the carrier’s legal minimum. The seven checks

1. Survey before quote. A 15-minute video survey or a room-by-room calculator with photographs. A quote produced without either is a guess, and the guess is usually low.
2. Named crews at both ends. ”Who loads at my address, and who delivers?” Reliable companies use their own crews in their hub regions and name their partner elsewhere.
