How to move to or from Austria for less – without the surprises

Cheap international moves exist. Cheap international moves that stay cheap at the door are rarer. Where the money goes

An international household move has five cost blocks: the vehicle and driver time on the road; the crew hours at each address; packing materials and labour; permits, ferries and customs; and insurance. The road leg is the one most people focus on and the one you can least influence – the distance is the distance. The blocks you can influence are the crew hours (fewer cubic metres, easier access), the packing (do it yourself), and the timing (share the vehicle, avoid the peak). In Austria the access block is bigger than most people expect: Vienna’s pre-1919 Altbau districts (Neubau, Josefstadt, Margareten, Ottakring) have small lifts or none, so the furniture lift (Möbellift, around €150–€300 a day) is how a sofa reaches the third floor; the no-stopping zone (Halteverbotszone) for the moving vehicle is applied for at MA 46 at least ten working days ahead, with the signs in place 24 hours before; Alpine addresses add winter access rules.

The five savings that are real

1. Consolidation (part-load). Your goods share a vehicle with two or three other households on the same corridor. The ”savings” that are not

The lowest auction bid. Portals such as Sirelo.at and ImmoScout24’s mover directory collect quotes; the winning bid in a reverse auction is the one most likely to add charges at the door – for the stairs, the parking, the ”extra” boxes, the customs. Hourly pricing. An hourly rate with an ”estimate” of hours is not a price. ”Customs extra”. From the UK, Switzerland and Norway household goods used six months enter free of duty and import VAT as Übersiedlungsgut after twelve months outside the EU, declared within a year of the move; 20 % VAT otherwise; a mover that leaves this to you has moved the cost, not removed it. Carrier’s legal liability instead of insurance. The legal minimum is a fixed amount per kilogram, far below the value of your goods; it is cheap because it covers almost nothing. A van and two men with no company number. Cheap until something breaks or does not arrive.

Is the price fixed, and on what volume? Who loads, who delivers? What does it assume about the stairs, the lift and the parking at both addresses? Who prepares customs, and what will you be charged if it is wrong? Is the insurance on declared value or per kilogram? What is the delivery window, and what if it is missed? Can you look up the company number? A cheap quote that answers all seven is a good deal. One that answers three is a deposit.
