Parking: Vienna’s short-term no-stopping zone (Halteverbotszone) for the moving vehicle is applied for at MA 46 at least ten working days ahead (official fees around €80, plus sign hire; movers’ all-in packages typically €165–€240), with the signs in place 24 hours before. The Gold price does not double when the volume does: Germany → Austria Gold rises from a median of €2,250 at 5–15 m³ to €4,650 at 25–40 m³, because vehicle and crew days set the cost more than cubic metres do. Platinum climbs more steeply, since packing time scales with the contents of every cupboard; Switzerland → Austria also carries customs handling on the Swiss side.

What Silver, Gold and Platinum include

Silver is transport plus one mover who loads and unloads together with you; you pack the boxes. Gold sends two professional movers (three above 30 m³) to load, carry and unload into the agreed rooms; you still pack, and in both packages furniture protection, assembly and materials are add-ons. Platinum adds full packing of cupboards, drawers and shelves into Flyto boxes, all materials, furniture protection, disassembly and reassembly, unpacking onto surfaces and removal of the empty boxes. Below Silver sit Flyto Budget (dedicated transport; you load and unload) and pallet freight (about 1–6 m³; you pack and palletise). Transport insurance is carrier liability under the CMR Convention in every package, with a weight-based limit; value-based cover is available separately. What moves the price on an Austrian move

• Volume and vehicle. Up to about 15 m³ a load usually shares a vehicle; above that it fills a van or a dedicated lorry, and the price steps up with the extra vehicle day rather than per cubic metre. A video survey before quoting stops the volume being wrong.
• Vienna: the Halteverbotszone. A short-term no-stopping zone for a removal is applied for at MA 46 (Verkehrsorganisation) at least ten working days ahead, online via mein.wien.gv.at or in writing, for at most one week or five working days and only the loading hours; the signs must stand 24 hours before it takes effect. Official charges: a €21 federal fee plus €6 per attachment (capped at €36) and a €60 administrative charge, with the signs hired privately on top. • Graz, Linz and Salzburg. A temporary Halteverbot for a move is an exemption permit under §45 of the Straßenverkehrsordnung: in Graz from the Straßenamt, Europaplatz 20, through the online form ”Ausnahmegenehmigung von Verkehrsbeschränkungen (Antrag)”; in Linz from the Bau- und Bezirksverwaltung, Hauptstraße 1–5, on an informal written application; in Salzburg from the MA 1/07 Verkehrs- und Straßenrechtsamt, Markus-Sittikus-Straße 4, which asks to be phoned before an application is lodged and has separate rules for the Altstadt. None publishes a moving-day tariff; allow two to four weeks and expect a price in the same region as Vienna.
• External lift. Where the stairwell or lift cannot take the sofa, an external furniture lift (Möbellift) is arranged on request at actual cost plus €50 handling, typically about €600 per side, and needs its own space in the Halteverbotszone.
• Dates. Month-ends and July–September cost more and book out earlier; inside two weeks you get whatever vehicle is free, usually a dedicated one at its price. Austrian lorry bans shape the delivery plan: lorries over 7.5 t, and lorry-and-trailer combinations where either unit exceeds 3.5 t, may not run on Saturdays 15:00–24:00 or on Sundays and public holidays 00:00–22:00, and lorries over 7.5 t are banned nightly 22:00–05:00 (USP – Lkw-Fahrverbote). Vehicles over 3.5 t pay the distance-based GO toll, lighter vans a vignette (ASFINAG – GO toll); both are in Flyto’s fixed price.

Customs and paperwork

From another EU country there is no customs on household goods – the move is transport plus registration. From the UK, Switzerland and Norway there is: household goods you have used for at least six months are imported free of duty and import VAT as Übersiedlungsgut when you transfer your residence to Austria after at least twelve months outside the EU, declared within twelve months of the move on the customs forms (ZBefr 2 / 2a) with proof of residence abroad, your Austrian address or employment contract and an inventory; the goods may not be sold or lent for twelve months. New items, alcohol beyond the allowance and goods for a second home pay 20 % VAT plus duty. Since Brexit, British citizens need a residence permit to live and work in Austria, usually arranged before the move.

Once in the country: the Meldezettel – register your address at the municipal office (in Vienna the Meldeservice) within three days of moving in, with the landlord’s signature on the form; it is the key to everything else, and late registration is fined. EU citizens staying over three months also register their right of residence (Anmeldebescheinigung) within four months. A car brought with you must be re-registered in Austria within one month of arrival – and NoVA, the Austrian registration tax, is due even when the car itself entered duty-free as household goods. Leaving Austria: deregister (Abmeldung) within three days of moving out.

Customs by origin: the form that applies to your move

Arriving in Austria: the first month’s paperwork

• Meldezettel – within three days. Register the new main residence at the registration authority for your address (in Vienna the Magistratisches Bezirksamt, elsewhere the Gemeindeamt) within three days of moving in. The accommodation provider signs the form, there is no fee, and failing to register carries a fine of up to €726 (oesterreich.gv.at – Registration of a new main residence).
• Anmeldebescheinigung – within four months. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens staying longer than three months apply to the settlement authority for a registration certificate within four months of arriving (oesterreich.gv.at – EU citizens and Swiss nationals).
• e-card. Your employer registers you with the social insurance when you start work; the e-card (with a photo from age 14) is your proof of health cover, and its 2026 service fee is €25, collected through the employer (oesterreich.gv.at – e-card).
• Driving licence. EU and EEA licences need not be exchanged. A licence from outside the EU/EEA must be converted within six months of taking up residence; conversion costs €90 and usually requires a practical test, from which category B holders from Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, among others, are exempt (oesterreich.gv.at – Foreign driving licences: conversion).
• Your car and NoVA. With your main residence in Austria, a foreign-registered car may be driven for one month from its first entry, plus one more month only if you can show the registration could not be completed in time (USP – vehicles with foreign plates). NoVA, a one-off tax on first registration set by CO₂ emissions as a percentage of the car’s value, is due in relocation cases too; duty-free entry as Übersiedlungsgut does not remove it (USP – Normverbrauchsabgabe).

What separates a remover from a portal

Search for removal companies in Austria and the first page is mostly comparison portals – Sirelo.at, ImmoScout24’s mover directory and similar – plus the large brands. Portals collect quotes; they do not move anything, and the cheapest bid in an auction is the one most likely to add charges at the door. The questions that separate a serious remover:

• Who loads and who delivers? A company that asks about your Altbau stairwell and the MA 46 permit before quoting has done the address before.
• Is the price fixed before loading? Volume-based fixed pricing with the access conditions and the Möbellift written in. Hourly or ”estimated” quotes are where the surprises live.
• Customs competence for UK, Swiss and Norwegian origins – explained in a paragraph, not a footnote.
• Insurance by declared value, not only carrier liability per kilogram.

Austria-specific practicalities

Appliances: 230 V, Schuko sockets – everything European works; British plugs need adapters. Kitchens: Austrian rentals usually come with a fitted kitchen, unlike Germany, but check the contract. Cars: re-registration within one month; NoVA is due on first Austrian registration regardless of how the car entered; EU-registered cars need a type approval or single approval. Pets: EU pet passport from an EU origin; animal health certificate within 10 days from the UK. Tenancies: fixed-term leases now run a minimum of five years from commercial landlords and three from private ones, with a tenant break after the first year on three months’ notice – plan the move date around the notice, not the other way round. Winter: Alpine deliveries carry a weather buffer from November to March.

Seasonality

Demand peaks from June to August and at month-ends, when Austrian tenancies turn over; November to February is quietest and cheapest.
