For most private-sector employees the employer requests it through the Qiwa and Muqeem platforms, and it is issued on Absher. Reforms now also let qualifying workers apply through Absher or Qiwa without employer approval where the contract has ended or expired. When the final exit visa is issued, your iqama is effectively cancelled but stays usable as ID until you leave at the airport.

Watch the clock: once issued you have a fixed window (currently 60 days) to depart, after which the visa must be cancelled and re-issued, with a fine. The Kingdom also requires a minimum remaining iqama validity to issue a final exit, so keep your permit current while the paperwork runs.

End-of-service settlement. Saudi labour law entitles you to an end-of-service award (gratuity) plus accrued leave. Reconcile the numbers with HR and, as is standard practice, ensure the settlement is paid and receipted before cancellation is finalised.

Close accounts. Settle and close bank accounts (or remit your final balance abroad before the account is frozen after departure), end mobile and utility contracts, clear any Absher traffic fines, terminate your tenancy and recover your deposit, and sell or de-register your car. Air freight is the fast alternative — a few days door to door — but it is charged by weight/volume, so it suits an essentials kit (clothes, laptop, documents, a few kitchen items) rather than furniture. Many people air-freight a small arrival box and sea-freight the bulk. Keep your passport, visa, employment contract, ToR1 approval and inventory with you rather than in the container.

3. United Kingdom customs & transfer-of-residence relief

• have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months;
• be moving your normal home to the UK;
• have owned and used the goods for at least six months before import; and
• not sell, lend or dispose of the goods for 12 months after import.

Goods that are new, still boxed or clearly bought for import are unlikely to qualify and may attract duty and VAT; alcohol and tobacco are excluded. Apply early — HMRC approval can take anywhere from about 24 hours to five weeks — because your agent needs the URN before the container lands, or the goods can incur storage charges. Keep proof of 12 months abroad (iqama, tenancy, salary certificates) and proof you are settling in the UK (job offer, visa, tenancy).
