What ”reliable” means in an international move

Every mover calls itself reliable. This page is written by one of them, and rather than repeat the word it explains how reliability is produced in a move to or from the Netherlands and how you can check it before you sign – with the registers, documents and questions that separate a company that shows up on the agreed day with the agreed crew and the agreed paperwork from one that does not. We use our own operation as an example where it helps and say where Flyto is the wrong choice.

Where moves to and from the Netherlands go wrong

Almost never on the motorway. They fail at five points: the volume was guessed, so the truck is too small or the price changes; the address was never asked about – and in the Netherlands that matters, because Amsterdam’s canal ring, Jordaan and De Pijp have no lift and stairs a wardrobe will not pass, so the exterior hoist (€150–€350) is how furniture gets in; Amsterdam reserves parking bays (TVM) at least six working days ahead at around €430 for one to two bays, Utrecht, Leiden and Haarlem have their own permits, and The Hague issues none; Rotterdam and Eindhoven are easier but need lift bookings in high-rises; customs paperwork was left to the customer, so the truck waits at the border; the job was subcontracted twice, so nobody owns the delivery date; and the insurance turned out to be the carrier’s legal minimum. A reliable company has a process for each of those five points and can describe it in a sentence.

The seven checks

1. Survey before quote. A 15-minute video survey or a room-by-room calculator with photographs. A quote produced without either is a guess, and the guess is usually low.
2. Named crews at both ends. ”Who loads at my address, and who delivers?” Reliable companies use their own crews in their hub regions and name their partner elsewhere. 3. A fixed price that lists its assumptions: volume, floors, lift, furniture lift, parking, shuttle vehicle, ferry, customs. Written assumptions can be checked; verbal ones cannot.
4. Customs in the contract. From the UK, Switzerland and Norway household goods owned six months enter free of duty and VAT under the verhuisboedelvrijstelling after twelve months outside the EU; 21 % VAT otherwise. The mover should prepare the declaration and list the documents it needs from you.
5. Insurance you can read. Under the CMR convention a road carrier’s liability is a fixed amount per kilogram; ask for transit insurance on declared value and read the exclusions.
6. A company you can look up: the Dutch company register or the home-country equivalent, a physical address, and dated reviews on a Google Business Profile rather than testimonials on the company’s own site.

The kinds of company you will meet in the Dutch market

Dutch FIDI specialists Voerman International, Schmidt Global Relocations, De Haan Relocation, Kuiper De Internationale Verhuizer, Mondial Movers, Holland Movers and Transpack Moving Services, Amsterdam expat movers Atlas International Movers and BearStorm, and the networks AGS, Crown, Santa Fe and Sirva. The global networks run corporate relocations with destination services and suit employer-paid moves; the national specialists have depots and regular routes and are strong on overseas containers; hub-based operators such as Flyto consolidate loads across Europe from their own hubs and price the whole move fixed. Comparison portals – Sirelo, Verhuisoffertes, Trustoo and iamexpat’s directory – collect quotes and pass the job on: useful for prices, but ask who actually loads. Portal auction bids often land 20–30 % below these and then add charges at the door; corporate packages land above. A quote far below the others has assumed something the others did not.

Reliability at the Dutch address

The delivery or collection address decides most of what can go wrong on the day. A company that raises these before quoting has done the address before; one that discovers them on the day charges you for the discovery.
