Relocating from Denmark to Mauritius means closing out an EU/Schengen life administratively while opening a non-EU one governed by Mauritian immigration and customs law. This corridor has two distinct halves: the Danish export side, run by Toldstyrelsen (Danish Customs Agency), your municipality’s CPR register and Skattestyrelsen (the tax agency); and the Mauritian import side, run by the Passport and Immigration Office and the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) Customs department. This guide is written for a Danish resident — Danish national or long-term resident — moving household goods, pets and possibly a vehicle from Denmark to Mauritius, with a short section on the reverse move back to Denmark.

Key takeaways

  • Your Mauritian immigration status (Occupation Permit, Residence Permit, or returning-citizen status) is checked by MRA Customs before your goods can clear duty-free — get the permit sorted first, ship second, per Passport and Immigration Office and MRA Clearance Procedures.
  • Leaving Denmark for more than six months must be reported to your municipality as an "udrejse" (departure) via borger.dk, no later than 5 days after you move and no earlier than 4 weeks before.
  • Your full Danish tax liability (fuld skattepligt) generally ends only once you give up your Danish home for good — see Skattestyrelsen’s guidance on leaving Denmark.
  • Carrying €10,000 or more in cash/bearer instruments out of Denmark — to any destination, EU or not — must be declared to Toldstyrelsen before departure.
  • Mauritius requires an import permit for household/personal effects to clear duty- and VAT-free, and the shipment must arrive within 6 months of you taking up residence, per MRA On Arrival and MRA Allowances.
  • Bringing more than Rs 500,000 (or foreign-currency equivalent) in cash or bearer instruments into or out of Mauritius must be declared to customs — see MRA Currency Declaration.
  • Pets need a Mauritian import permit from the Division of Veterinary Services, applied for well ahead of shipping, plus quarantine on arrival — see the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Portal — while Denmark’s Fødevarestyrelsen sets the export-side ID, rabies and certificate rules.
  • Danish cars are left-hand drive; Mauritius only allows right-hand-drive vehicles on its roads, which rules out shipping your Danish car in the vast majority of cases (see Section 6).

1. Immigration status decides your customs treatment

Mauritian customs does not treat all incoming residents the same. What matters first is which permit the Passport and Immigration Office has issued you, because MRA Customs checks your legal basis for residing in Mauritius before granting duty exemptions on your shipment:

  • Occupation Permit — a combined work-and-residence permit for professionals, investors and the self-employed, issued by the Passport and Immigration Office, generally for up to 3 years (professionals) or up to 10 years (investors/self-employed), renewable.
  • Residence Permit for Employment — issued alongside a Ministry of Labour work permit for employees taking up a job in Mauritius, per the Residence Permit for Employment page.
  • Retired Residence Permit — for retirees, issued for up to 10 years.
  • Returning-citizen status — applies only to Mauritian citizens who lived abroad at least one year; a Danish national moving to Mauritius does not qualify for this route.

Whichever status applies, keep the permit approval letter, your passport, and a detailed shipment inventory ready — MRA’s clearance process explicitly asks for the "Passport Memo" issued by the Passport and Immigration Office alongside your Bill of Entry, per MRA Clearance Procedures. Sort the permit before you book your shipment: customs cannot grant the personal-effects duty exemption to someone without a valid basis to reside in Mauritius.

2. The Denmark export side

Customs authority. Denmark’s customs agency is Toldstyrelsen, part of the Danish Ministry of Taxation. Used personal belongings leaving Danish/EU customs territory for a non-EU destination like Mauritius don’t attract Danish export duty or VAT, but your international mover or their customs broker will still file a standard EU export declaration before the shipment leaves the EU, stating an estimated value for the shipment as a whole — you don’t need to itemise a precise price for used household items. (Note: Toldstyrelsen’s dedicated Erklæring om flyttegods form, 12.024, is the import-side declaration used by people moving to Denmark from outside the EU — relevant if you ever move back; see the Reverse Move section below.)

Deregistering from the CPR register. Before you leave, you must report your move abroad to your home municipality via borger.dk. This applies once your stay abroad will exceed six months — shorter absences don’t require formal deregistration. Per the CPR administration’s guidance, the departure ("udrejse") can be reported digitally from up to 4 weeks before you leave, and must be reported no later than 5 days after the move. This deregistration is what closes your access to Danish public healthcare (Sygesikring) and stops most Danish public benefits tied to residence.

Tax exit. Full tax liability (fuld skattepligt) under the Kildeskatteloven does not automatically end the day you deregister from CPR — it ends when you genuinely give up your permanent home in Denmark, generally by selling it, giving notice on a rental, or renting it out on a non-terminable lease of at least 3 years. Skattestyrelsen’s guidance holds that the decisive test is whether you retain a year-round dwelling you control in Denmark; keep a house or apartment available and full tax liability can continue even after CPR deregistration — see Skattestyrelsen: leaving Denmark. Departing shareholders should also check whether exit taxation on shareholdings applies. Notify Skattestyrelsen directly once your move is settled.

Cash declaration on departure. If you or your household are carrying €10,000 or more (or the equivalent in any currency, including traveller’s cheques and securities) when leaving Danish customs territory — to Mauritius or anywhere else — you must declare it to Toldstyrelsen before crossing the border, per Toldstyrelsen’s guidance on travelling with large amounts of cash. Failing to declare is a customs-law offence that can carry a fine.

3. Ports and transit — realistic estimates, not official figures

Denmark has no direct scheduled container service to Mauritius; freight normally routes through a European or Middle Eastern/African transshipment hub (commonly Rotterdam, Hamburg, or a Mediterranean hub, then onward toward the Indian Ocean, sometimes via Durban or a Gulf port) before reaching Port Louis. The two most relevant Danish gateways are:

  • Port of Aarhus — Denmark’s largest container port, handling the majority of the country’s box traffic, on Jutland’s east coast.
  • Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) — the combined Copenhagen/Malmö terminal serving eastern Denmark and the Øresund region.

Freight-industry estimate, not an official figure: sea freight from Aarhus or Copenhagen to Port Louis, via transshipment, typically runs in the region of 6–9 weeks door-to-port depending on carrier routing and connections, plus onward inland/customs clearance time in Mauritius. Air freight, routed via Copenhagen Airport, is typically 1–2 weeks for cargo depending on consolidation schedules. Always get carrier-specific transit times for your actual booking — these ranges vary by season and by which transshipment port is used.

4. The Mauritius import side

MRA Customs treats a genuine transfer-of-residence shipment of used personal and household effects as duty- and VAT-free, subject to conditions set out in MRA’s Allowances page and On Arrival guidance:

  • Goods must be your own used personal/household effects, not intended for sale or gift.
  • Unaccompanied baggage (your sea/air shipment following you) should ideally arrive within, and no later than 6 months after, your own arrival in Mauritius to be included in the duty exemption, at the Director-General’s discretion.
  • Clothing, toiletries and personal jewellery for personal use are admitted free of duty and VAT.

The process. Your shipping line, airline or removal company will issue arrival papers once the consignment lands. Clearance is done through a Bill of Entry filed with MRA Customs, per MRA Clearance Procedures; in practice a licensed customs broker or your removal company’s local partner files this on your behalf. You’ll need your passport, the "Passport Memo" issued by the Passport and Immigration Office confirming your resident status, a detailed inventory of the shipment, and the shipping line’s arrival documents. Depending on contents, extra clearance can be required from the Ministry of Health (foodstuffs/pharmaceuticals), the Ministry of Agriculture (plants/agricultural items), or the Police (arms).

Currency on arrival. If you’re carrying more than Rs 500,000 in cash, bearer negotiable instruments, precious stones/metals or other high-value goods (or the equivalent in foreign currency), you must declare it to MRA Customs — use the red channel — on both entry and exit, per MRA Currency Declaration.

5. Pets

Denmark export side. Fødevarestyrelsen sets Denmark’s rules for pets leaving to a non-EU ("third") country: your dog or cat needs ISO microchip ID, a valid rabies vaccination, and — because Mauritius is outside the EU pet-passport system — typically a specific health/export certificate rather than just the standard EU pet passport. Check FVST’s certificate database for the exact certificate Mauritius requires and start the process well ahead of shipping, since blood-test and waiting-period requirements can take months to satisfy.

Mauritius import side. The Division of Veterinary Services, under the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, issues the mandatory import permit for dogs, cats and other pets — see the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Portal’s livestock import guidance. You apply using the species-specific application form before shipping; official processing of a completed application is typically around two working days, but rabies-related testing and timing requirements on the Danish side mean you should start preparations at least a few months out. Expect mandatory quarantine on arrival in Mauritius, plus clearance and quarantine fees payable locally.

6. Vehicles, money and things people forget

Vehicles. Mauritius drives on the left and only permits right-hand-drive vehicles on its roads; Danish-registered cars are left-hand drive, which in practice rules out shipping your own car. Any used vehicle import also requires a separate permit from the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection, with duty calculated by MRA using FOB value and age-based depreciation — see MRA’s motor vehicle import guidance. The returning-citizen duty exemption applies only to Mauritian citizens who lived abroad at least a year — not to foreign nationals on an Occupation or Residence Permit.

Cash, both ends. Remember both declaration thresholds: €10,000 leaving Denmark (Toldstyrelsen) and Rs 500,000 entering (or leaving) Mauritius (MRA). These are separate declarations at separate borders — one doesn’t substitute for the other.

Easy to forget:

  • Danish healthcare (yellow card / Sygesikring) access ends once you deregister from CPR — arrange private/local health cover for Mauritius before you land.
  • If you keep any Danish property, revisit the tax-residency question — a retained home can keep your full Danish tax liability alive even after you’ve moved.
  • Alcohol/tobacco entering Mauritius has its own separate personal allowance distinct from the general household-goods exemption, per MRA Allowances — don’t assume it’s covered by your moving shipment’s duty-free status.
  • Book your import permit and Bill-of-Entry paperwork before the sea shipment departs Denmark — clearing customs in Mauritius without the Passport Memo and permit in hand causes real delays and storage costs at Port Louis.

Reverse move: Mauritius back to Denmark

Moving back is administratively the mirror image but not identical. On re-entry you register a new address in Denmark ("tilflytning") with your municipality via borger.dk/CPR, which restores your access to Danish public services. Because Mauritius sits outside the EU, your used household goods generally qualify for the EU’s transfer-of-normal-residence relief — duty- and VAT-free entry into the EU for personal property you owned and used abroad for a meaningful period before the move — administered by Toldstyrelsen on arrival. This is where Toldstyrelsen’s Erklæring om flyttegods (Declaration on Removal Goods), form 12.024, actually comes in — see the form page on toldst.dk — and keep your Mauritius purchase/ownership records to support the claim. Pets returning to the EU must enter via an approved EU travellers’ point of entry with valid rabies documentation, and if Mauritius isn’t on the EU’s list of rabies-risk-exempt countries, a rabies antibody titer test taken well before travel may be required — check Fødevarestyrelsen’s current country list before you book.

How Flyto handles your Denmark to Mauritius move

Flyto runs its own offices, warehouses, teams and vehicles across Northern, Central and Southern Europe, which is where we handle the Danish collection, export documentation and consolidation ourselves. For the Indian Ocean leg and Mauritian customs clearance, we work through a carefully vetted network of shipping partners and subcontractors, plus trusted local partners on the ground in Mauritius who handle Bill of Entry filing, permit coordination and last-mile delivery. That combination keeps the European side under our direct control while giving you experienced local expertise exactly where Mauritian rules require it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to sell my Danish home to stop paying Danish tax?
Not necessarily — selling, giving notice on a rental, or renting it out on a non-terminable lease of at least 3 years can also work. What matters is genuinely giving up control of a year-round dwelling in Denmark; keeping a house available to you can keep full tax liability alive even after you’ve moved — see Skattestyrelsen’s guidance on leaving Denmark.

Can I bring my Danish car to Mauritius?
In practice, no — Mauritius only allows right-hand-drive vehicles, and Danish cars are left-hand drive. A used vehicle import also requires a separate permit from Mauritius’s Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection.

How long can my shipment take to arrive after I do?
To qualify for MRA’s duty-free personal-effects treatment, your unaccompanied baggage should arrive within 6 months of your own arrival in Mauritius, per MRA’s On Arrival guidance.

What happens if I forget to deregister from CPR?
Denmark can keep treating you as resident for tax and registration purposes, which can create conflicting obligations. Report your udrejse via borger.dk within 5 days of moving.

Do I need a permit to bring my dog or cat?
Yes on both ends: Denmark requires ID, rabies vaccination and the correct export certificate for a non-EU destination (Fødevarestyrelsen), and Mauritius requires an import permit from the Division of Veterinary Services plus quarantine on arrival.

Is there a cash limit I need to worry about?
Two separate limits apply: declare €10,000+ leaving Denmark, and declare Rs 500,000+ (or equivalent) entering or leaving Mauritius.
