Cross-border movers from France handle EU intra-EU and non-EU destinations door-to-door

Short answer – top relocation companies in France: established French international movers are Demeco, Les Gentlemen du Déménagement, AGS Déménagement International (the Mobilitas group), Grospiron and Bailly Déménagements; for the UK–France corridor, Matthew James Removals, Britannia Movers International and Anglo French Removals; for employer-paid relocations, Crown, Santa Fe and Sirva. For a household move within Europe on your own budget at a fixed price with the Paris parking authorisation and monte-meubles included: hub-based operators such as Flyto. Indicative 2026 cost for a one-bedroom flat, consolidated: £1,600–£3,600 from the UK, €1,200–€4,000 from elsewhere in Europe.

What this page is, and what it is not

Most ”best international movers in France” pages are a list of logos with stars. This one is written by a company that loads and delivers in France every week, and it answers the questions that decide how a French move goes: which route your goods take to Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux or the Riviera, what a Haussmann staircase or a Provençal village does to the price, what paperwork matters for EU and non-EU origins, what a realistic budget is, and how to tell a remover from a quote-matching site. We name competitors where it helps and we say where Flyto is the wrong choice.

How international moves to and from France actually run

France is the road hub of Western Europe. From the UK: Calais–Dunkirk or the Eurotunnel, then the A1 or A16 to Paris in three hours, a day to Lyon and the Alps, two to Bordeaux, the Dordogne and the south. From the Benelux and Germany: the A1/A4 into Paris the same day. From Spain and Portugal: over Irún or La Jonquera in a day. From the Nordics: three to four days via Germany. Flyto’s Central European hub and its Southern European hub consolidate loads on all of these corridors several times a month, and dedicated vehicles run on demand for larger homes and fixed dates. In Flyto’s own enquiry data, France is a top-ten European destination, with the UK→France (Dordogne, Brittany, Normandy, the Riviera), the Netherlands→France, Germany→France and Switzerland→France as the busiest inbound corridors, and France→Spain and France→Canada as the busiest outbound ones.

Transit, door to door: 1–3 days on a dedicated vehicle from the UK, the Benelux, Germany or Switzerland; 3–7 days consolidated; 4–8 days from the Nordics, Portugal or Italy. Corsica adds the Marseille or Toulon ferry and 2–4 days.

The French address is the price

The motorway is the easy part. Paris (Le Marais, Saint-Germain, the 9th, 10th, 11th and 18th): Haussmann buildings with a lift the size of a phone box or none at all, spiral service stairs, a cour a truck cannot enter and a concierge who controls the hours – the exterior furniture lift (monte-meubles, typically €180–€300 per half-day for the hire alone; around €600 per side with operator and paperwork in Flyto’s pricing) is how sofas reach a fifth-floor flat, and the parking authorisation (autorisation de stationnement) is applied for on the City of Paris online service at least 15 days ahead (€17–€90 per vehicle depending on size and zone, plus a small fee for the lift); without it the crew carries. Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille and Nice: old-town cores with the same stairwells and low-emission zones for older vehicles; Nice and the Riviera add steep villa access and gates. Villages in the Dordogne, Provence, Brittany and the Alps: lanes too narrow for a truck, so a shuttle vehicle does the last kilometre; Alpine resorts have winter access rules. New-builds: underground garages too low for a truck. We ask about all of it before quoting and write the answer into the fixed price; a quote that did not ask will be corrected on the day.

Flyto quote data 2026: moves from and to France

The table above is the market. Below are Flyto’s own 2026 quotes on the French corridors: n quotes, prices including VAT, rounded to the nearest €50; Gold with its interquartile range (p25–p75), Silver and Platinum as medians. This is what customers were actually quoted, not a price list – every move is priced on volume, both addresses, dates and access. UK rows add an approximate sterling figure at 1 € ≈ £0.85.

  • Silver: transport plus one mover loading and unloading with you; you pack; CMR insurance.
  • Gold: transport plus two movers (three above 30 m³) who load, carry and unload into the agreed rooms; you pack; protection, assembly and materials are add-ons.
  • Platinum: Gold plus full packing, all materials, furniture protection, disassembly and reassembly, unpacking onto surfaces, empty boxes removed.

25–40 m³ 10 €4,650 €5,450 (€3,950–€5,950) €8,900

Two things stand out. Volume matters more than distance: Gold for 5–15 m³ is €2,200 to the Netherlands, €2,950 to Germany and €3,200 to Spain or Switzerland, while doubling the load to 15–25 m³ on the Spanish corridor costs about 75 % more. Inbound and outbound are near-symmetric: Spain→France Gold medians €3,100 / €4,700 / €5,750 against €3,200 / €5,650 / €5,900 the other way. Rows with few quotes (France→Germany 15–25 m³, three; France→Switzerland, six per band) are indications only. Transit follows the rule of one driving day per 600–700 km plus loading and unloading days; a consolidated load replaces the fixed day with a five-to-ten-day window. Your own figure: the price calculator.

What moves the price

Volume first, then access at both ends, then dates. Under two weeks’ notice the consolidation slot is usually gone and a dedicated vehicle replaces it; the last fortnight of August competes with every Paris tenancy turnover. A non-EU origin adds a customs file (handling included in Flyto’s price for the UK, Norway and Switzerland; the authorities’ duties and VAT are not). Storage is €100 per month per 6 m³ container plus €15/m³ handling; items over 80 kg are priced separately; extra work is €85 per hour per mover. Three items first-time France movers forget to budget:

Parking authorisations in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Nice

A removal truck on a French street is a temporary occupation of the public domain. The four largest cities, from their own pages:

City Where to apply Lead time Fee Worth knowing
Paris City of Paris online service (My Paris account) At least 15 days Vehicle under 3.5 t €17/€27 per half-day/day on a paid strip, €25/€40 elsewhere; over 3.5 t €35/€60 and €50/€90; furniture lift €10/€20 and €15/€30 Compulsory outside a paid strip, beyond six consecutive hours in one bay, or with a furniture lift
Lyon Ville de Lyon – OTEP (Occupation Temporaire de l’Espace Public) Online, at least one week €69 for one to two days, 20 m of kerb The city places the sign; up to five plates park free; municipal police tow an occupied bay
Marseille Ville de Marseille – online moving request Complete file 15 days before Free Applicant posts the order and marks the bay; the automated pedestrian zones (Opéra, Canebière) need a separate access request at least 5 working days ahead
Nice Ville de Nice – Direction du Stationnement (request form) 5 working days for a marked bay on the web page (7 days on the form); 7 working days for carriageway, pavement, bus lane or pedestrian zones €33 with the city placing the sign on a marked bay; no fee stated for other locations Elsewhere the city supplies no signs – hired and placed by the applicant; a monte-meubles needs a sketch of the window and is banned along the tram’s overhead line

The municipal fee is the small part. With application, signage and the person placing it, the authorisation typically comes to around €200 per side, and an external lift with operator around €600 per side, arranged at actual cost plus €50 handling. A quote that does not mention the permit for a Paris, Lyon or old-town Marseille address has not priced the address.

Low-emission zones and Crit’Air for the truck

Paris, Lyon and Marseille each run a zone à faibles émissions mobilité (ZFE-m); every vehicle entering one, foreign-registered included, needs a Crit’Air vignette from the official site (€3.11 plus postage). Greater Paris: inside the A86, lorries classed Crit’Air 3, 4, 5 or unclassified are banned daily 08:00–20:00, penalty-free until 31 December 2026. Lyon: the same classes of lorries and vans are banned around the clock inside the Laurent Bonnevay ring road, €135 fine for lorries. Marseille: the city-centre zone applies around the clock to all categories and, per the government ZFE portal, excludes Crit’Air 5, 4 and unclassified. Parliament’s April 2026 vote to abolish the zones was struck down by the Conseil constitutionnel on 21 May 2026 (decision 2026-903 DC), so they stay in force. Ask your mover which vignette its vehicles carry.

Monte-meubles

In Paris the lift is declared on the same authorisation as the truck (the €10–€30 line above); elsewhere it goes into the occupation request, and Nice wants a sketch of the window and the lift’s footprint. It pays from the third floor without a lift and for anything that will not turn on a spiral service stair, and it needs a bay directly under the window – planned from the survey, not decided on the day.

Customs and paperwork

From another EU country there is no customs on household goods – the move is transport plus registration. From the UK, Switzerland and Norway there is: household goods you have owned and used for at least six months are imported duty- and VAT-free when you transfer your residence to France, on a customs declaration (déménagement – franchise) with an inventory in duplicate, proof of at least 12 months’ residence outside the EU, proof of your French address and a signed statement that the goods are not for resale; the declaration (Cerfa 10070) includes an undertaking not to sell, lend or hire out the goods for 12 months. New items, alcohol beyond the allowance and goods for a second home pay 20 % VAT plus duty – and a holiday home does not qualify for the relief. Since Brexit, British citizens need a long-stay visa (usually a VLS-TS) applied for before the move to live in France for more than 90 days.

Once in the country: there is no municipal registration in France; instead, open a bank account (often the first obstacle – bring proof of address and the tenancy), register with the health system (Ameli) once you have a job or after three months’ residence, and exchange your driving licence within a year if required. Leaving France: notify the tax office of your departure date and file the final return the following spring; the exit tax on large shareholdings applies above thresholds.

Customs relief by origin: the forms and the conditions

Between France and any other EU country there is no customs procedure for household goods, in either direction. Each non-EU corridor has a relief scheme with its own form, filed before the goods travel. Flyto’s France customs guide covers the French side in detail; the essentials:

Direction Authority and form Conditions in short
Into France from the UK, Switzerland, Norway or any non-EU country Direction générale des douanes – transfer of main residence (Cerfa 10070) 12 months’ residence outside the EU; goods used privately for 6 months; valued, dated and signed inventory in two copies; proof of the foreign residence and of settling in France; import within 12 months; no sale, lease, loan or pledge for 12 months. Excluded: alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles, professional equipment. Customs returns a certified inventory and, for a car, the 846 A certificate for the carte grise.
France → UK HMRC – ToR1 application under the Transfer of Residence rules 12 consecutive months outside the UK; goods owned and used 6 months; import within 12 months of arrival; apply online before shipping and quote the unique reference number on the import declaration, or duties and administration charges are billed and reclaimed later; no lending, hiring or transfer for 12 months. Excluded: alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles, goods from second or holiday homes.
France → Switzerland BAZG – form 18.44, Zollveranlagung von Übersiedlungsgut Goods used personally for 6 months and kept in use; form 18.44 with inventory and proof of the move (employment contract, lease, deregistration); cleared at the border in the office’s commercial-goods hours, Monday to Friday 08:00–11:30 and 13:30–17:00 – the truck is timed to the office.
France → Norway Tolletaten – flyttegodserklæring RD 0030 One continuous year abroad; goods kept and used during the stay; import within one year of the move; itemised list by category (”box 1 – clothes”); red channel on arrival. Excluded: motor vehicles, food, alcohol, tobacco, professional equipment.

Two traps recur. A holiday home qualifies under none of the schemes – goods for a second home pay duty and VAT. And ”used six months” is checked against the inventory: a sofa bought in May for a September move is declared and taxed separately.

Arriving in France: registration reality, CPAM, driving licence, carte grise

There is no municipal registration. France has no equivalent of the German Anmeldung or the Belgian commune registration; your address exists through the lease, the utility contract and the tax return, and the state’s free change-of-address service updates the tax office, health fund and vehicle register in one step. Registration is replaced by a short list of separate steps.

Health cover (CPAM). With a French employer, the employer opens your rights with the Assurance Maladie; you receive a social security number, open an ameli account and order the carte Vitale. Without one, universal health protection (PUMa) covers anyone residing in France stably and regularly – file form S1106 with your local CPAM. Keep an EHIC or private cover for the gap.

Driving licence. An EU or EEA licence is valid in France without exchange; you exchange it only on expiry, loss or theft, a new category, or after a points offence in France. A licence issued outside the EU/EEA is recognised for one year from taking up normal residence; if the issuing country has an exchange agreement with France, apply through France Titres – ANTS within that year. British licences issued before 2021 stay recognised without exchange.

Car. A vehicle you bring must be registered in France within one month of settling, through ANTS: an EU-registered car needs the quitus fiscal from the tax office, a non-EU car the 846 A customs certificate issued with the household-goods clearance; a provisional certificate (CPI) covers the month in between, and a car over four years old needs a contrôle technique under six months old.

Money and pension. A French bank account is usually the first blocker – see opening a French bank account. Leaving rather than arriving? See a French pension abroad and the other France guides.

What separates a remover from a quote-matching site

Most first-page results for movers in France are comparison portals – Sirelo, Nextories and Movinga (now operated under licence by Moveagain AG) – plus the large brands. Portals are useful for collecting quotes; they do not move anything, and the cheapest bid is the one most likely to add charges at the door. The questions that separate a serious remover:

  • Who loads and who delivers? A company that asks about your Haussmann staircase and the mairie’s parking authorisation before quoting has done the address before.
  • Is the price fixed before loading? Volume-based fixed pricing with the access conditions and the monte-meubles written in. Hourly or ”estimated” quotes are where the surprises live.
  • Customs competence for UK, Swiss and Norwegian origins – the inventory, the non-cession certificate and the second-home trap explained in a paragraph, not a footnote.
  • Insurance by declared value, not only carrier liability per kilogram.
  • Verifiable reviews on a Google Business Profile and a company registration you can look up (SIREN or the home-country equivalent).

Who else moves to and from France – an honest map

French international specialists: Demeco, Les Gentlemen du Déménagement, AGS Déménagement International (the MOBILITAS group, headquartered in the Paris region), Grospiron, Bailly Déménagements and the Chambre Syndicale du Déménagement members – established, FIDI-affiliated in several cases, strong on corporate and overseas container moves. UK–France specialists: Matthew James Removals, Britannia Movers International, Anglo French Removals and similar run the Channel corridor weekly for British buyers in the Dordogne and Brittany. Global networks: Crown, Santa Fe and Sirva also serve France and suit employer-paid relocations. Where Flyto fits: households moving between France and the Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, Spain, Portugal, the Nordics and overseas who want one contract, a fixed price and a company that plans the Paris monte-meubles or the village shuttle rather than discovering them on the day – and who do not need a corporate-mobility programme. If you need a Paris company with a depot for a move across town, we are the wrong choice and will say so.

How Flyto handles this corridor

Flyto runs France from its own hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Europe with partner depots in every major European city, so a Paris collection and a Málaga, Milan, Brussels, Amsterdam, Zurich or London delivery sit on the same consolidation plan. The price is fixed before loading on the declared volume and the access at both addresses – one contract, one contact person. Transit is insured door to door under the CMR Convention, with value-based cover available on top. Customs handling for the UK, Switzerland and Norway is included; parking authorisations and the monte-meubles are arranged and priced in advance. Relocation services – home search, registration paperwork, settling-in – are available as an add-on through vetted partners.

A France move, step by step

6–8 weeks before: volume estimate (room-by-room calculator or a 15-minute video survey), fixed quote, consolidated or dedicated. 3–4 weeks before: dates confirmed, packing materials delivered, parking authorisation applied for on the city’s online service, monte-meubles booked if the survey showed it, customs file assembled for non-EU origins. 1 week before: packing (yours or ours), photographed inventory, declaration filed. Moving day: loading, inventory signed, goods to the hub or straight onto the dedicated vehicle. Delivery: crew in the agreed window, lift or shuttle vehicle as planned, reassembly, packing material removed, inventory signed off.

A worked example: a two-bedroom flat from Amsterdam to Paris 11e

Volume by video survey 16 m³. Consolidated load collected in Amsterdam De Pijp on a Monday, delivered to a fourth-floor Haussmann flat without a lift near Oberkampf. The fixed price covers: collection with two crew, furniture blankets and stretch wrap, 22 boxes of material, the Amsterdam and Paris parking authorisations, a monte-meubles for the sofa, bed and wardrobe, delivery within a three-day window four to six days after collection, reassembly and removal of packing material. No customs – both countries are in the EU. Indicative 2026 market cost for this profile: €2,300–€3,200. On a dedicated vehicle with a fixed delivery day: roughly €3,400–€4,400. For comparison, Flyto’s own 2026 Netherlands→France quotes put Gold at a median €2,700 for 5–15 m³ and €4,850 for 15–25 m³ (inbound table above); a 16 m³ load sits at the bottom of the second band.

France-specific practicalities

Appliances: 230 V, type E sockets – Schuko plugs fit, UK plugs need adapters. Kitchens: unfurnished French rentals (non meublé) often come without appliances and sometimes without kitchen units – a kitchen is a real line in the inventory. Cars: re-registration with a French carte grise within a month of residence, with a quitus fiscal from the tax office for EU cars; a UK car can be imported VAT-free as household goods if owned six months, but right-hand drive needs headlight conversion. Pets: EU pet passport from an EU origin; animal health certificate within 10 days from the UK. Tenancy: the entry inventory (état des lieux) is formal and detailed – schedule it before delivery, not after.

Seasonality

Demand peaks from June to September and at month-ends; the whole summer is the French peak, culminating in the last weeks of August and early September when schools restart and Paris tenancies turn over. February and November are the quietest and cheapest. In Flyto’s enquiry data 63 % of planned European moves fall in July–September. If your dates are flexible, a consolidated move outside the peak is the best value; if you must move in late August, book six to eight weeks ahead and accept a delivery window rather than a day.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an international move to France take?

One to three days on a dedicated vehicle from the UK, the Benelux, Germany or Switzerland; three to seven days consolidated; four to eight days from the Nordics, Portugal or Italy.

Do I pay import duty on my furniture?

Not from an EU origin. From the UK, Switzerland or Norway, household goods owned six months are duty- and VAT-free when you transfer your main residence to France, with the inventory and address paperwork. A holiday home does not qualify.

Can you deliver to a fifth-floor Paris flat without a lift?

Yes. We apply for the parking authorisation and book the monte-meubles in advance and include both in the fixed price.

Is a consolidated (part-load) move safe?

Yes. Each household’s goods are labelled, inventoried and photographed separately, and transit insurance covers the full route.

When should I book?

Four to six weeks ahead outside the peak; six to eight weeks for June–September and the end of August.

Do you also move out of France?

Yes – the same corridors run in reverse every week, including to the UK (with ToR1), Spain, the Benelux, Germany, the Nordics, Québec and overseas.

What does a move from France to Spain actually cost with Flyto?

In Flyto’s 2026 quote data for France→Spain (113 quotes, median distance 1,351 km) the Gold median was €3,200 for 5–15 m³, €5,650 for 15–25 m³ and €5,900 for 25–40 m³ including VAT, with Silver roughly €400–€700 below and Platinum €700–€3,200 above. Spain→France is almost symmetric. Your own figure depends on volume, addresses, dates and access.

Do I need a parking authorisation in Paris even for a small van?

Yes if the van parks outside a paid strip, stays more than six consecutive hours in one bay or a furniture lift is used – which covers almost every real move. Apply on the City of Paris online service at least 15 days ahead: a light vehicle costs €17–€40 per half-day or day, a heavy one €35–€90, the lift €10–€30.

Can a foreign-registered removal truck enter the Paris or Lyon low-emission zone?

Yes, with a Crit’Air vignette of an admitted class, ordered on the official certificat-air.gouv.fr site (foreign plates included). Inside Greater Paris, lorries classed Crit’Air 3 or worse are banned daily 08:00–20:00, with no fines until 31 December 2026; in Lyon the same classes are banned around the clock, €135 fine. Ask your mover which class its vehicles are.

Do I have to register at the mairie when I arrive in France?

No. France has no municipal registration. Instead you open health cover with the CPAM (your employer does it if you have a French job; otherwise form S1106 under PUMa), register a car you bring within one month via ANTS, exchange a non-EU driving licence within a year if required and open a bank account.

Which customs form do I need when leaving France for the UK, Switzerland or Norway?

UK: HMRC’s ToR1, applied for online before shipping, which gives the unique reference number for the import declaration. Switzerland: BAZG form 18.44 with an inventory and proof of the move, cleared at the border during commercial customs hours. Norway: Tolletaten’s flyttegodserklæring RD 0030 with an itemised list, declared in the red channel. All three exclude alcohol and tobacco.
