Switzerland Cross-Border Household Movers 2026: Top Providers

International movers Switzerland — customs, costs and routes
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, which is why an international move to Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern or Lausanne needs a mover who knows the paperwork, not just the road. Household goods for a new Swiss resident are imported duty-free with form 18.44 (Übersiedlungsgut) plus proof of residence — get it wrong and the truck waits at the border. Flyto arranges removals to Switzerland from Germany, the UK, the Nordics, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy, and moves out of Switzerland to anywhere in Europe, through its own hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Europe and partner crews in Switzerland.
Indicative 2026 market ranges (not a Flyto quote): 10–15 m³ from Germany €1,800–€3,200, from the UK €2,600–€4,500; 25–35 m³ €4,500–€9,500. Transit 1–3 days from Germany or Northern Italy, 4–7 days from the UK or the Nordics. Swiss cities require a parking reservation for the moving vehicle and many older buildings have no lift — both are priced in advance in a fixed quote.

Short answer – top relocation companies in Switzerland and Geneva: the companies that verifiably move households across the Swiss border in 2026 are the Swiss FIDI specialists Welti-Furrer (Zurich), Keller Swiss Group, Harsch (Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, Basel), Swiss Moving Service and Gosselin Moving (Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich), the global networks AGS, Crown, Santa Fe and Sirva for employer-paid relocations, and hub-based operators such as Flyto for fixed-price household moves within Europe with form 18.44 included. For Geneva, Harsch and Gosselin Moving have local depots. The comparison below shows how the company types differ.
What this comparison is – and is not
This is not a ranked list with stars. It compares the types of company that move households across Switzerland’s border – Swiss specialists, global relocation networks, hub-based operators, brokers and part-load carriers – on the eight things that decide whether a Swiss move goes well, and it names the companies in each group that verifiably exist and do this work in 2026. It is written by a company that loads and delivers in Switzerland all year round, so we use ourselves as one of the examples and say where we are the wrong choice. Costs by corridor, the form 18.44 process and a worked example are on our international moving companies Switzerland page; this page is about choosing between kinds of company.
The five kinds of cross-border mover in Switzerland
Swiss international specialists. Welti-Furrer (Zurich, around a thousand international moves a year), Keller Swiss Group, Harsch (Geneva, with Lausanne, Zurich and Basel offices), Swiss Moving Service (Schlieren) and Gosselin Moving (Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich) – established, several FIDI-affiliated, strong on corporate moves and overseas containers. The industry association is SMA – Swiss Movers Association, whose certified members are listed on its site.
Global relocation networks. AGS, Crown, Santa Fe and Sirva serve Switzerland and are built for employer-paid moves with destination services, immigration and a global account.
Hub-based operators. Companies such as Flyto that consolidate loads from their own regional hubs – ours are in Northern, Central and Southern Europe – and price the whole move fixed, door to door, with the customs declaration included. Regular consolidated departures on the busy corridors (Germany, the Benelux, the UK, Spain, the Nordics), dedicated vehicles on demand.
Brokers and comparison portals. Top Offerten, Sirelo and Comparis’ directories collect quotes and pass the job on. Useful for prices; ask who actually loads.
Part-load and van operators. For a student room or a few boxes.

The questions that expose the difference
- ”Who delivers at my address?” A company name at each end, not ”our partner network”.
- ”Is form 18.44 prepared by you, and what do you need from me?” Passport, residence permit or employment contract, proof of twelve months’ residence abroad, inventory. The declaration must be ready before the truck reaches Basel, Geneva, Chiasso or St. Margrethen; ”customs extra” is where border delays start.
- ”What does the price assume about my Zurich or Geneva address?” The temporary parking ban ordered through the city police 5–10 working days ahead (roughly CHF 60–170), the furniture lift for a fourth-floor Altstadt flat, the shuttle vehicle for a mountain commune, the Täsch reload for Zermatt.
- ”Is the insurance on declared value, or the carrier’s legal minimum per kilogram?”
- ”What is the delivery window, and what if it is missed?”
Swiss practicalities every company must handle
Duty- and VAT-free entry of household goods used six months abroad on form 18.44 (8.1 % VAT on anything that does not qualify); registration at the commune within 14 days; health insurance within three months, backdated; the type J socket; the meticulous rental hand-over (Wohnungsabgabe) that puts a professional end-of-tenancy clean between loading and the appointment; and the customary tenancy end dates that concentrate demand – end of March and September in Zurich, any month-end in Basel, no fixed dates in Geneva.
What it costs
Indicative 2026 market ranges, door to door, consolidated, customs included (not a Flyto price list): a one-bedroom flat (10–15 m³) €1,500–€2,900 to or from Germany, Austria, France or Italy and €1,800–€4,200 to or from the Benelux, the UK, Spain or the Nordics; a three-bedroom house (25–35 m³) roughly two to two and a half times that. Dedicated vehicles add 30–60 %; corporate packages sit above; broker bids start below and often end above.

Flyto quote data 2026: moves from and to Switzerland
These tables are not a price list. They show what Flyto customers were actually quoted in 2026 for door-to-door moves on the six busiest outbound corridors and the two busiest inbound ones. Every move is priced on volume, both addresses, dates and access; the median is the middle quote in each band, p25–p75 the range of the middle half. Prices include VAT, rounded to €50. Swiss francs are an approximation at 1 € ≈ 0.94 CHF – Flyto quotes in euros.

Flyto also quoted France → Switzerland (23 quotes), Spain → Switzerland (22) and Finland → Switzerland (15); Gold medians for 5–15 m³ were €3,200, €4,050 and €4,900. Silver to Gold costs €150–€900 more depending on the band, most often €400–€750: a second mover, not a second lorry.
Packages. Silver: transport, one mover loading and unloading with you, CMR insurance, you pack. Gold: two professional movers (three above 30 m³) load, carry and unload into the agreed rooms, you pack. Platinum: Gold plus full packing into Flyto boxes, all materials, furniture protection, disassembly and reassembly, unpacking onto surfaces. Swiss customs clearance handling is included in every package; any duty or VAT the authority charges is not.
Transit, typical not guaranteed. A dedicated vehicle covers 600–700 km per driving day plus a loading and an unloading day: Germany (median 606 km) one day, Italy (991 km) and the UK (1,096 km plus the Channel) two, Spain (1,642 km) and Portugal (1,966 km) three; a consolidated load adds a 5–10 day delivery window. Lorries over 3.5 t may not drive in Switzerland between 22:00 and 05:00 or on Sundays (ASTRA), which rules out a Sunday-evening arrival for a Monday loading.
What moves the price on the Swiss corridors
Volume is the biggest driver, as the bands show; a room-by-room estimate in the price calculator is enough for a fixed quote. Parking for the lorry is the Swiss-specific one; each of the four largest cities has its own procedure.
| City | Who issues it | Lead time | Fee (authority) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zurich | Stadtpolizei, Parkplatzreservation | 7 working days (blue zone), 3 (white zone); max. 14 days | About CHF 120–170 for 1–2 bays for a day |
| Basel | Kantonspolizei Basel-Stadt, Parkverbotsschilder zum Zügeln | 8 days online (police set up and collect the signs); 48 h if you collect and place them yourself | CHF 50 per order plus CHF 5 per sign and day |
| Geneva | Ville de Genève, autorisation d’espace public; signage under cantonal rules | 10 working days; signs posted at least 3 days before | Not published on the city page; signs placed by the commune’s service or a private signage contractor |
| Bern | Stadt Bern, Parkverbot für Umzüge | 8 working days | Permit free; signs via a removal firm or the Kantonspolizei |
Flyto books the reservation on request at the authority’s actual cost plus €50 handling – typically about €200 per address. The other levers: an external lift for a lift-less Altstadt flat, about €600 per address, or carrying time at €85 per hour per mover; dates, because the Zurich end-of-March and end-of-September hand-overs and the June–September peak fill consolidated departures first; short notice under two weeks, which usually means a dedicated vehicle; customs, where clearance handling is in the price but duty and 8.1 % Swiss VAT (ESTV) fall on goods that fail the relief conditions; storage at €100 per month per 6 m³ container plus €15 per m³ handling; and items over 80 kg, priced separately.
Customs both ways: form 18.44 into Switzerland, Regulation 1186/2009 into the EU, ToR1 into the UK
Into Switzerland
Household effects enter duty- and VAT-free when you transfer your domicile to Switzerland and have used the goods personally for at least six months (BAZG – Moving, household effects). The declaration is form 18.44, presented on arrival at a customs office during commercial-goods opening hours, with an inventory and proof of the transfer of residence – an employment contract, a lease or the old commune’s deregistration for EU/EFTA nationals, the residence permit for others (BAZG – Moving to Switzerland: procedure). Goods bought within six months are listed separately and taxed, follow-up consignments are announced at the first import, and the household should arrive within two years (BAZG – FAQ removal goods). At Chiasso-Strada, Mendrisiotto and Vedeggio the file can be sent two working days ahead; the lorry must then cross there.
Out of Switzerland into the EU
Leaving is the simpler half: the Swiss export office accepts an inventory list with your Swiss and foreign addresses, and a private car is declared with a copy of its Swiss registration document (BAZG – Umzug: Ausfuhr aus der Schweiz). On the EU side, household goods of a person transferring normal residence from a third country enter duty-free under Articles 3–11 of Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009: 12 continuous months outside the EU customs territory, goods owned and used for six months, entered within 12 months of establishing residence, not lent, pledged, hired out or sold for 12 months afterwards; alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles excluded. Each member state applies it through its own authority and form:
- Germany – the Zoll, written declaration on form 0350, import VAT exempt as well (Zoll – Transferring residence).
- Spain – the Agencia Tributaria, with proof of deregistration abroad (baja consular for Spanish citizens) and of the new Spanish residence (AEAT – Traslado de residencia).
- Italy – the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli, application at the competent customs office on form Mod. F-01 A (F-01 B where a guarantee is required) (ADM – FAQ, ADM – Franchigie doganali).
France, Portugal and the Netherlands apply the same regulation with their own forms; restricted items are covered in our guide to customs for household goods from Switzerland.
Switzerland to the UK
Great Britain is outside both customs unions, so Zurich to London needs HMRC’s Transfer of Residence relief: you apply on form ToR1 before the goods ship and the unique reference number goes on the import declaration (GOV.UK – Apply for ToR1). The conditions mirror the EU’s – 12 consecutive months outside the UK, goods owned and used for six months, imported within 12 months, not disposed of for 12 months, alcohol and tobacco excluded (GOV.UK – Transfer of residence to the UK). Flyto prepares the UK declaration; the ToR1 application is in your name.
Arriving in Switzerland: the first 14 days, three months and twelve months
- 14 days – register with the commune. At the residents’ registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle, contrôle des habitants) within 14 days of arrival (ch.ch – Notifying a change of address), and for EU/EFTA nationals before starting work (SEM – FAQ).
- Permit B or L. An EU/EFTA contract of 12 months or unlimited gives a B EU/EFTA permit valid five years; three to twelve months gives an L EU/EFTA permit for the contract’s length.
- Three months – basic health insurance. Sign up within three months and cover and premiums are backdated to arrival; later, cover starts only from enrolment, a surcharge applies and the canton can assign an insurer (FOPH – Requirement to obtain insurance).
- 12 months – driving licence. You may drive on a foreign licence for 12 months after taking up residence, then exchange it at the cantonal road traffic office – EU/EEA licences without a driving test (ch.ch – Exchanging your driving licence).
- Your car. Used abroad six months or more, it clears duty-free on form 18.44 at the first crossing with the car present; you receive form 13.20 A and must apply for Swiss plates within one year. A newer car runs up to two years on customs permit 15.30 (BAZG – Customs clearance of vehicles: relocation).
The full arrival overview is on ch.ch – Moving to Switzerland; what to do with a Swiss bank account after moving abroad and our other Switzerland moving guides are on the Flyto site.
Where Flyto is – and is not – the right choice
We are the right choice for households moving between Switzerland and Germany, the Benelux, the UK, Spain, Portugal, the Nordics and overseas who want one contract, a fixed price with form 18.44 included, and a company that plans the Swiss address in advance. If you need a corporate-mobility programme with permits and school search, relocation services – home search, registration paperwork, settling-in – are available as an add-on through vetted partners; we are the wrong choice if you need a Zurich company with a depot for a move across town, or a guaranteed delivery day on a consolidated budget – book a dedicated vehicle or a Swiss specialist for that, and we will say so.
How Flyto handles the Swiss corridor
Flyto runs the Swiss corridors from its own hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Europe, with partner depots in every major European city and vetted partner crews in Switzerland. The price is fixed and agreed before loading, with the parking reservation, lift and customs assumptions written in, on one contract with one contact person, insured door to door under CMR with value-based cover available on top. In practice: you enter volume and both addresses and get a door-to-door price in about two minutes; we confirm the loading week and order the city parking reservation; you complete form 18.44, the export inventory or ToR1 from our checklist; the crew loads, the lorry clears at the border office named in your file, the delivery crew carries in. Relocation services – home search, registration paperwork, settling-in – are available as an add-on through vetted partners.
Frequently asked questions
Which companies move households across Switzerland’s border?
Swiss specialists such as Welti-Furrer, Keller Swiss Group, Harsch, Swiss Moving Service and Gosselin Moving; global networks (AGS, Crown, Santa Fe, Sirva); hub-based operators such as Flyto; and brokers such as Top Offerten, Sirelo and Comparis that pass the job on.
Do I need a Swiss company for a move to Switzerland?
No. What matters is who physically delivers at your Swiss address and whether form 18.44 is prepared before the border – ask for the delivering company’s name and the customs checklist.
What is the cheapest way to move to or from Switzerland?
A consolidated (part-load) move outside the June–September peak and away from the Zurich end-of-March and end-of-September hand-over dates, with your own packing.
Do I pay duty or VAT on my furniture?
Not on household goods used six months abroad when you transfer your residence, declared on form 18.44. New goods and alcohol beyond the allowance pay duty plus 8.1 % VAT.
How far ahead should I book?
Four to six weeks outside the peak; six to eight weeks for June–September and the Zurich hand-over dates.
Does Flyto move out of Switzerland as well?
Yes – the same corridors run both ways all year round, with the EU import declaration or the UK’s ToR1 prepared by us.
How much does it cost to move from Switzerland to Spain in 2026?
In Flyto’s 2026 quote data (36 quotes, median 1,642 km) the Gold median – two movers load and unload, you pack – was €4,000 for 5–15 m³, €6,050 for 15–25 m³ and €5,600 for 25–40 m³ including VAT; Silver was €350–€600 less, Platinum with full packing €4,900–€7,900.
What does a move from Germany to Switzerland cost?
Germany → Switzerland was Flyto’s busiest inbound corridor in 2026 with 33 quotes over a median 722 km. Gold medians were €3,100 for 5–15 m³, €4,250 for 15–25 m³ and €5,600 for 25–40 m³ including VAT – roughly CHF 2,900, CHF 4,000 and CHF 5,250 at 1 € ≈ 0.94 CHF. Customs clearance handling with form 18.44 is included.
Do I need a parking reservation for the removal lorry in Zurich or Geneva?
Almost always. Zurich reserves bays through the Stadtpolizei with seven working days’ notice in the blue zone, Basel’s Kantonspolizei sets up mobile signs ordered eight days ahead, Geneva needs a public-space authorisation ten working days ahead with signs posted three days before, and Bern’s permit is free but ordered eight working days ahead.
Do I pay import duty in Germany, Spain or Italy when I leave Switzerland?
Not on household goods, provided you have lived outside the EU for 12 months, owned and used the goods for six months and import them within 12 months of moving – Regulation (EC) 1186/2009. Germany uses customs form 0350, Spain the AEAT transfer-of-residence procedure with your deregistration certificate, Italy the ADM form Mod. F-01 A at the local customs office. Alcohol and tobacco are excluded.
