Key takeaways

  • Pets are the longest-lead item — start first. Nigeria is not an EU-listed country, so a dog or cat needs a microchip, rabies vaccination, and a rabies antibody titration test (blood taken at least 30 days after vaccination, result at least 0.5 IU/ml), then a three-month wait before EU entry. Plan four to five months from the vaccination.
  • Residence permit first, personnummer second. As a Nigerian national you must get a residence permit from Migrationsverket (usually valid at least 12 months) before you can register with Skatteverket for a personnummer.
  • Household goods enter duty- and VAT-free as flyttsaker if you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months, have owned and used the goods for at least 6 months, and bring them within a year of arrival. You declare them to Tullverket with an inventory.
  • Nigerian licences cannot be exchanged; Sweden recognises only a very small number of third countries (Japan and Switzerland), so you must pass Swedish tests.
  • Sea freight from Lagos to Gothenburg is the standard route; air freight is the fast option for essentials.

1. Leaving Nigeria: what to close out

Moving from Nigeria to Sweden joins two separate jobs — a clean exit from Nigeria and a compliant, correctly ordered entry into Sweden. Two things drive the whole timeline: the Migrationsverket residence permit and the pet pathway. Start both months ahead of everything else.

Travel documents and exit formalities. You will travel on your Nigerian passport from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). Nigeria requires no exit visa for its citizens, but since 2025 every traveller must complete the mandatory Landing and Exit Card via the NIS portal before departure. Confirm your passport has ample validity.

Your Swedish residence permit. As a third-country national you must hold a residence permit before moving. Applications (work, EU Blue Card, family reunification, study, and so on) go to the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). Crucially, the sequence in Sweden is strict: you obtain the residence permit card first, and only then can you register for a personnummer. For population registration (folkbokföring) the permit generally needs to be valid for at least 12 months. Do not commit to freight or flights until the permit is granted.

Customs export from Nigeria. Household goods leaving Nigeria clear through the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Your mover or clearing agent prepares the outward declaration and a detailed, valued packing list in English. Keep your Tax Identification Number (TIN), passport, and transport documents (bill of lading or air waybill) together — the inventory you build now is the one Swedish Customs will want too.

Pet export clearance. Animals leave Nigeria via the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), which issues the export permit and international veterinary health certificate. This is the last step in the pet chain, after the EU-side titre test and waiting period in section 5.

Wrap up the rest. Close or downgrade utilities and tenancies, keep at least one Nigerian bank account open for later income or refunds, and collect employment, tax, and academic references. Arrange apostilles (Hague Convention) on your civil-status and education documents in Nigeria — it is far simpler than doing it from abroad, and Swedish authorities will often ask for them.

2. How your household goods ship to Sweden

Sea freight is the standard for a full household. Containers leave Lagos — Apapa or Tin Can Island, which handle most of Nigeria’s sea trade — and sail to the Port of Gothenburg, Scandinavia’s largest port and the main gateway for Sweden. A 20-foot container suits a small home, a 40-foot suits a family house, and shared groupage (LCL) lets you pay only for the volume you use if you have less than a full box.

Transit time is best given as a range. Sailings from West Africa to the Nordic region take a number of weeks port to port — usually longer than to Rotterdam or Valencia because vessels often route via a north-west European hub before the Baltic/North Sea leg. Add time at both ends for consolidation and booking in Lagos and for clearance and inland delivery in Sweden. Plan with a generous buffer and carry what you need for the first few weeks.

Air freight from Murtala Muhammed International in Lagos to Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter takes days rather than weeks. It is far dearer per kilo, so use it for documents, essentials, and anything urgent, and let the bulk follow by sea.

Packing and paperwork. Swedish relief depends on an inventory that matches the shipment, so use a mover who packs and lists to customs standard.

3. Sweden customs & transfer-of-residence relief

When you move your permanent residence to Sweden from outside the EU, your used personal belongings — furniture, clothes, household goods — can normally be imported free of customs duty and VAT as flyttsaker (removal goods). This relief is administered by Swedish Customs (Tullverket).

The core conditions:

  • You must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months.
  • You (or someone in your household) must have owned and used the items for at least 6 months in your residence outside the EU.
  • You must bring the goods within one year of arriving to take up residence in Sweden — the year runs from the day you arrive.

How it is filed. You declare the belongings to Tullverket, typically supported by a detailed inventory. In practice your mover’s Swedish customs agent handles the declaration for you. Note that the relief does not extend to alcohol and tobacco, which have their own rules, and the goods must be genuine used personal effects rather than commercial items or newly purchased goods. Keep evidence of your time outside the EU and of taking up residence, as Tullverket may ask for it.

4. Arriving: registration, residence, driving, healthcare

Residence permit, then personnummer. The order is fixed in Sweden. First you collect (or already hold) your residence permit card (uppehållstillståndskort) from Migrationsverict. Then, if you will live in Sweden for at least a year, you register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for population registration (folkbokföring). On successful registration Skatteverket assigns your personnummer — the personal identity number you need for banking, healthcare, and most services. Bring your residence permit card, passport, and civil-status documents (often apostilled and translated) to your Skatteverket appointment.

ID card. Once you have a personnummer you can apply to Skatteverket for a Swedish ID card, which makes daily life (collecting parcels, proving identity, opening accounts) much easier.

Driving. Sweden exchanges non-EU/EEA licences only for a very small number of countries — in practice Japan and Switzerland. Nigeria is not among them, so you cannot convert your Nigerian licence. You may drive on a valid foreign licence for a period, but to hold a Swedish licence you must go through the Swedish process (theory and practical tests) via Transportstyrelsen and Trafikverket. Begin early if you rely on driving.

Healthcare. Once you are registered in the population register with a personnummer, you generally gain access to Sweden’s publicly funded healthcare via your regional healthcare provider (region), paying only modest patient fees. Before you are registered, make sure you have private or travel health cover for the gap.

5. Pets

Start the pet process before anything else — it sets your earliest possible arrival. Nigeria is not on the EU’s list of approved third countries, so a dog or cat must complete the full non-listed-country route:

  1. Microchip — an ISO-standard microchip implanted first. It must precede the rabies vaccination, or the vaccination will not count.
  2. Rabies vaccination — given after the microchip, once the animal is at least 12 weeks old.
  3. Rabies antibody titration test — a blood sample taken at least 30 days after vaccination, tested at an EU-approved laboratory, showing at least 0.5 IU/ml.
  4. Three-month wait — you must wait three months from the date of that successful blood sample before the animal may enter the EU.
  5. EU animal health certificate (AHC) — issued by an official veterinarian, valid 10 days for entry, and you must arrive via a designated Traveller’s Point of Entry, where documents are checked.

On the Nigerian side, NAQS issues the export permit and international veterinary health certificate in the final days before travel. Sequence backwards from your target arrival: microchip and vaccinate, wait 30 days, test the blood, wait three months, then arrange the AHC and NAQS paperwork. Realistically this is four to five months from the first vet visit — so the pet, not the shipping schedule, dictates how soon you can move.

6. Money, banking & tax basics

Banking. A Swedish bank account is far easier to open once you have a personnummer, and often a Swedish ID card too. Some banks offer limited accounts for newcomers in the meantime. Keep a Nigerian account open for income and refunds that arrive after you leave, and check the Central Bank of Nigeria’s rules on moving funds abroad before transferring large amounts.

Tax residence. Once you are registered in the population register and living in Sweden, you are generally taxed as a Swedish resident on worldwide income. If you have Nigerian property, business income, or pensions, take advice on how the two systems interact and on the timing of your move.

Cost of living. Sweden is a high-cost country, with Stockholm the most expensive city. Rental housing in the big cities can be hard to find on the first-hand market, so budget time and money for accommodation, and expect higher day-to-day prices than in Nigeria.

How Flyto handles your Nigeria to Sweden move

Flyto Relocation manages the whole corridor as one sequenced project. We begin with the pet timeline — microchip, vaccination, titre test at an EU-approved laboratory, the three-month wait, then the AHC and NAQS export paperwork — because that clock, not the vessel schedule, sets your earliest arrival. In parallel we arrange export clearance and professional packing in Lagos, book sea freight to Gothenburg or air freight to Arlanda/Landvetter, and prepare the inventory so our Swedish partner can declare your flyttsaker to Tullverket. With our own hubs across Northern, Central and Southern Europe we coordinate both ends and hand you a clear order of operations: residence permit from Migrationsverket first, then folkbokföring and personnummer at Skatteverket, then banking, healthcare, and driving. Get a quote and we will plan your dates around the items that actually gate the move.

Frequently asked questions

Does my dog or cat really need a rabies titre test to enter Sweden from Nigeria?
Yes. Nigeria is not an EU-listed country, so a blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after rabies vaccination, tested at an approved laboratory showing at least 0.5 IU/ml, then followed by a three-month wait before EU entry. See European Commission — Food Safety.

How long does the pet process take?
Plan four to five months from the first vet visit: microchip and vaccinate, wait 30 days, test the blood, then wait a further three months from the sampling date before travelling. See European Commission — Food Safety.

Will I pay duty or VAT on my household goods?
Not if you qualify for flyttsaker relief: at least 12 months outside the EU, goods owned and used at least 6 months, brought within one year of arrival, and declared to Tullverket with an inventory. See Tullverket.

What is the right order for registration in Sweden?
Residence permit from Migrationsverket first, then registration with Skatteverket, which assigns your personnummer. See Skatteverket.

Can I exchange my Nigerian driving licence?
No. Sweden exchanges non-EU/EEA licences from only a handful of countries (in practice Japan and Switzerland), so a Nigerian licence must be replaced by passing the Swedish tests. See Transportstyrelsen.

Which port do my belongings arrive at?
Sea shipments from Lagos route to the Port of Gothenburg; air freight goes to Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter. Sea transit takes several weeks plus clearance and delivery time. See Port of Gothenburg.
