Czech Driving Licence Abroad 2026: EU/EEA Validity, Exchange in Third Countries and IDP

Czech driving licence in EU/EEA: valid until it expires

A Czech driving licence issued after 19 January 2013 follows the EU model under Directive 2006/126/EC (the third generation EU driving licence). It is valid throughout EU, EEA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), Switzerland and the UK (post-Brexit under the agreement) without exchange for its full validity period — typically 10 years for B/B1/M/AM/A1/A2/A categories or 5 years for C/CE/D/DE.

For licences issued before 2013 (old format) exchange in the destination state becomes mandatory after a certain residency period. EU standard: after 6 months to 2 years depending on country, the original validity remains until then. If your old Czech licence is about to expire, it is worth renewing in the Czech Republic to a new EU model and gaining another 10 years of validity.

Exchanging the Czech licence for a local one in EU: how and when

Outside EU: conventions, IDP and local exams

Outside EU/EEA/Switzerland/UK things get more complex:

USA

Each US state has its own rules. Most states (California, New York, Florida, Texas) require exchange to a local licence after 30-90 days of residency. Some states (Massachusetts, Maryland) require a full theory and driving test. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in the Czech Republic before departure — issued by ÚAMK, ABA or Czech Automotive Touring Club for 50-100 Kč, valid 3 years, serving as a translation of the Czech licence for the period before getting a US licence. Without an IDP you risk a fine 100-500 USD on a traffic stop.

Canada

Provinces have their own rules. Ontario, BC, Alberta recognise the Czech licence for 60-90 days, then exchange is required. The Czech Republic has bilateral mutual-recognition agreements with Ontario and Quebec — exchange without a test.

Australia and New Zealand

Australian states NSW, Victoria, Queensland recognise the Czech licence for 3 months, then exchange is required. With permanent residency in Australia, exchange must happen within 3 months. Eye test required, but no practical exam for EU licence holders.

UAE, Singapore, Korea

UAE: exchange under bilateral agreement for EU citizens with a residence visa — no test, fee 800-1 200 AED. Singapore: exchange within first 12 months without exam for EU licence holders. South Korea: exchange under reciprocity, eye test only, fee 7 000-15 000 KRW.

International Driving Permit (IDP): when and where to get it

The International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1968 Vienna Convention or 1949 Geneva Convention is a translation of the Czech licence into multiple languages. Issuers:

– ÚAMK (Czech Automotive Club) for 50 Kč, on the spot, valid 3 years;

– ABA (Autoklub Bohemia Assistance) for 100 Kč, on the spot;

– ČNADA (Czech National Auto and Transport Club).

Required: valid Czech licence, one passport photo (35×45 mm), Czech ID or passport. IDP is mandatory for driving in countries like USA, Mexico, Brazil, India, Japan, Indonesia, Egypt, Morocco — even short-term.

Penalty points and offences: what carries over to the new licence?

The Czech penalty-point account does not transfer to a foreign system. On exchanging a Czech licence for a German/Austrian/other EU licence you receive a new licence with zero points (or the local default). Some countries check Czech offences via EUCARIS (European Car and Driving Licence Information System) — serious offences (major traffic accidents, alcohol, drugs) do carry over.

A driving ban issued in the Czech Republic is enforceable across EU thanks to RESPER. Conversely, a ban from another EU country is enforceable in the Czech Republic — getting a new licence requires the ban period in the issuing country to expire.

Professional licence and tachograph abroad

For professional drivers (categories C, CE, D, DE) note:

– Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) — valid throughout EU under Directive 2003/59/EC;

– Driver tachograph card — Czech-issued cards work throughout EU;

– On emigration, file an application for a destination-country tachograph card for later replacement.

Practical plan for emigrants with a driving licence

30 days before emigration: verify your Czech licence is the post-2013 EU model. If it expires within 12 months, renew in the Czech Republic (faster and cheaper than exchanging in destination).

14 days before emigration: for non-EU: get IDP from ÚAMK or ABA. For EU: ensure you have an EU-standard photo.

Departure date: bring the Czech licence with you. Don’t return it to the ohlašovna. After exchange in destination, the Czech licence is either submitted to the destination office (Germany, Austria) or kept (Slovakia, Poland — but invalid on Czech checks after exchange).

180 days after emigration: for Germany, Austria, Netherlands the exchange deadline approaches. Book an appointment at the local office (Führerscheinstelle, Verkehrsamt).
