Danish CPR Number After Emigration 2026: MitID, NemID, and Folkeregistret Changes

The CPR number is permanent — but its access ecosystem changes

The Danish CPR-nummer (10-digit personal number) is yours for life. Emigration does not cancel it, replace it, or alter its format. CPR-loven §3 specifies that the number is issued once and remains the unique identifier across all Danish public registers — Folkeregister, SKAT (now Skattestyrelsen), Udbetaling Danmark, sundhedsvæsen. Your CPR record is updated to ’udrejst’ (departed) with the new foreign address and country code. Any stay abroad of more than 6 months must be registered as departure under CPR-loven §24, stk. 1 — even if your family stays in Denmark (source: cpr.dk, danskelove.dk).

What changes is access: MitID may stop working when your bank closes the account, NemKonto may be deactivated, e-Boks may need a foreign mobile or e-mail update, Sundhedskort is invalidated, and Udbetaling Danmark may suspend payments pending re-registration. Each of these requires its own action — see the respective sections below.

MitID continuity: the cornerstone of Danish digital life

MitID replaced NemID in 2023 and is now the only valid digital identification for public services and banks. MitID is administered jointly by Digitaliseringsstyrelsen (state) and Finans Danmark (banks). Crucially, MitID is bound to either a private mobile (with Danish or foreign number) or a hardware code-display (kodeviser). Emigration affects MitID in three ways:

• Bank disconnection: when your bank closes your account, the bank-side MitID issuance is lost. The state-side MitID typically remains valid as long as you have at least one active activation method.
• Mobile number changes: update your MitID phone number via mitid.dk before changing SIMs. Foreign numbers work but SMS-OTP delivery to some carriers is unreliable.
• Re-issuance abroad: if MitID lapses entirely, re-issuance requires physical presence at a borgerservice (Danish citizen service) or a Danish embassy supporting MitID issuance (Madrid, London, Paris, etc.).

NemKonto and digital postal communication

NemKonto is the Danish public-payment account routing system. Every CPR has one designated NemKonto into which the state pays refunds, child benefit, pension, etc. After emigration, NemKonto can be:

• Replaced by a Danish account at a different bank (if your original closes);
• Replaced by a foreign IBAN with full SEPA reach via NemKontoUdland service;
• Closed entirely if no Danish payments are expected.

For ongoing pensions or refunds, NemKontoUdland accepts foreign IBANs with no fee. Apply via nemkonto.dk with MitID — the link to your CPR is automatic.

e-Boks: keep it active for life-long communication

e-Boks is the official digital postal service. Public agencies (Skattestyrelsen, Udbetaling Danmark, kommunes) deliver mandatory communications here. After emigration, e-Boks remains active provided you renew the access method (MitID or temporary access code). It is the primary channel for tax demands, pension statements, and citizenship-related correspondence — keep it updated with a foreign address and verified email.

Important: under e-Boks rules, a message is considered legally delivered when it appears in your inbox, regardless of whether you read it. Set up email forwarding to alert you of new messages — sign in at e-boks.com under MitID and configure under ’Indstillinger > Notifikationer’.

Updating the CPR address abroad

Address changes within Denmark are reported to the kommune via borger.dk with MitID, and under CPR-loven §12 the move must be reported within 5 days of the new address taking effect (source: danskelove.dk). Address changes abroad use the same flow but require entry of country code + foreign address details (street, postal code, city, country). For destinations with non-Latin scripts (e.g. Greek, Arabic), use Latin transliteration. You can file the udrejseanmeldelse up to 4 weeks before departure and no later than 5 days after departure via borger.dk self-service (source: borger.dk). Updates take 1-3 business days to propagate to all linked agencies. Late notification can result in administrative fines from the kommune.

The Folkeregister verifies addresses periodically — typically every 2-3 years — by sending a verification letter to the registered foreign address. Failure to confirm receipt or respond can lead to the CPR being marked ’forsvundet’ (lost), which suspends digital access until verified at a borgerservice or Danish embassy.

SKATs TastSelv access from abroad

TastSelv (Skattestyrelsen’s online tax portal) is fully accessible from abroad with MitID. You can file selvangivelse, view årsopgørelse, request residency certificates, and update bank details. Most non-resident landlords and pensioners use TastSelv for everything. Helpline support is available in English at +45 72 22 18 18, Mon-Fri 09:00-16:00 CET. For exit-tax matters, complete form 04.029 ”The Danish Tax Agency must be informed about your new address etc. when you leave Denmark” via skat.dk, and call Skattestyrelsen on +45 72 22 28 92 one week after CPR deregistration (source: skat.dk).

Erhvervsstyrelsen and CVR registrations

If you are listed as director (direktør), board member (bestyrelsesmedlem), or beneficial owner (reel ejer) of a Danish company in CVR (Det Centrale Virksomhedsregister at Erhvervsstyrelsen), your foreign address must be updated within 14 days under Selskabsloven §10. Update via virk.dk with MitID. Failure is an administrative offence with fines starting at DKK 5,000.

For ApS (anpartsselskab) and A/S (aktieselskab) where you remain sole director after emigration, Selskabsloven requires at least one EU/EEA-resident director or a registered process agent — confirm before departure to avoid forced dissolution.
